SPF that is SAFE for Hair Extensions
I’m sure you’re thinking “why does SPF matter when it comes to my hair extensions”?!
Well, it does and I’ll share with you why.
First off, let me just say that I am, in no way, a health provider or expert in any way. I am a hair stylist who is passionate about finding healthier products that work well, both inside and out. The following is just based off the knowledge I’ve gained over the years and the experiences I have had both personally and professionally. If you’re looking for nutritional or medical advice, please see the proper professional. I’ve provided links to share where I got some of this information.
Thank you for getting through that.
Now, there are ingredients in some sunscreens that will leave a peachy or salmon hue on your hair extensions that DOES NOT GO AWAY. I would hate for you to completely ruin you’re new investment just because the wrong SPF.
Here is what I’ve learned about hair extensions + spf myself and what I’ve learned from others:
Some SPFs contain hormone disrupting ingredients that not only cause damage to your hair extensions but block they way your body naturally functions. Avoiding these ingredients will not only benefit your hair, but will most likely benefit your health as well.
The most common one, that I feel we are all familiar with now, is Avobenzone. Avobenzone blocks a wide range of UV rays but it has a toxicity that can consistently interfere with hormonal functions and also work with carcinogens.
Another common ingredient in suncreens that don’t work well with hair extensions is Oxybenzone. Oxybenzone is known for it’s UV blockers and anti-aging properties (so check your skin care too). This ingredient is potentially unsafe for the environment and could cause some skin allergies and is a hormone disruptor.
These 2 ingredients have circled on the internet as the WORST ingredients for not only your hair extensions, but clearly your health as well.
I thought I would take it a step further and give you a list of the other ingredients I would avoid that will potentially damage your new investment:
-Avobenzone
-Oxybenzone
-Homosalate
-Octinoxate
-Octocylene
-Octisalate
I suggest avoiding all of these ingredients not just for your hair, but for your health as well.
Of course, I want you to protect your hair so we can improve your natural hair over time. But at the end of the day, I want you to be happy and healthy too.
So, as a solution, let me set you at ease with my favorite SPFs I like to use that work well with hair extensions AND that I feel comfortable putting on my body:
-SALT & STONE Mineral Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50
-SALT & STONE Mineral Sunscreen Lotion SPF 30
-LIGHTWEIGHT SHEER DAILY SUNSCREEN SPF 40
(SALT & STONE is reef safe and you can find them at one of my favorite coffee shops Vacancy)
-Hello Bello Mineral SPF 50 Sunscreen Lotion (Reef Safe)
-Sun Bum Mineral SPF 50 Sunscreen Lotion (Vegan and Hawaii 104 Reef Act Compliant)
My favorite SPF for your hair extensions is the Oribe Invisible Defense Spray. This is a spray designed to give you heat protection and UV protect while improving the softness of your hair
